There are some faces you just need to paint. Like that of Herman Brood: the Dutch rock ‘n roll junkie. A musician, actor, poet and painter. And a drug addict. ‘Knuffeljunk’, people called him in the Netherlands: the cuddly junkie. Loved by and laughed at by many, while he slowly sank away into a heroin addiction.
Herman Brood was born on the 5th of November, 1946. And died by suicide on the 11th of July in 2001, aged 54. A few months before his death I met him very briefly and awkwardly and afterwards, painted his portrait. Five portraits actually, because of this uncomfortable incident.
